The Bellarine Rail Trail is a shared pathway for cyclist, walkers and horses. The rail trail runs from South Geelong Station (about 2km from city centre) via village of Drysdale to Queenscliff at the entrance to Port Phillip Bay. The Bellarine Peninsula Railway operates heritage steam trains on the old rail line between Queenscliff and Drysdale. Queenscliff marks the beginning or the end of the Great Ocean Road and lies close to the entry to Port Phillip Bay. Travelling by car, it is approximately ninety minutes from Melbourne via Geelong. Queenscliff can also be reached via the car/passenger ferry from Sorrento. Queenscliff is one of the most popular spots in Victoria. The fine old buildings and monuments in and around the town are reminders of its romantic and colourful maritime past. You can enjoy Queenscliff and the surrounding region in all seasons. Attractions include great golf courses, walks and bike rides. There is also a restored steam train ride from Queenscliff to Drysdale. Close by are historic Fort Queenscliff, wineries, fishing and diving charters, local markets, museums, galleries and bookshops. |
The rail trail has marker posts every kilometre along the trail. The red gum posts give distances from Geelong, Drysdale and Queenscliff, as well as an emergency number that can be quoted to summons emergency services. Brilliant! Why doesn't every cycle track (rail trail or not) have similar marker posts? |
